WENK(Denver) Alex Smith
Hey guys! Hope all is well at school or on your internships! Some background about where I am working for the currently, Wenk is a landscape architecture office based in Denver that works on a huge range of projects, from more urban park spaces to campus planning and tons of wetland restoration. So far, I’ve been lucky enough to work on six different projects, which has made every day feel different and exciting.
A big chunk of my time has been spent on two master plan renderings. I have also been working on a community outreach presentation for a local park 2 mins from my house! Looking forward to drawing concepts this upcoming Friday! They’ve been both tedious and oddly relaxing at the same time.
During my first week, I also got to go on a couple of site visits, which was a great way to dive in. The first visit focused on tree mitigation, where we marked which trees were being removed for a future trail and documented their condition. The next site visit was at CU Boulder’s sophomore dorms. Those students are pretty lucky. This project was especially cool because it includes about $2 million worth of cut stone terraces stepping down nearly 12 feet of grade, creating seating walls and planting pockets throughout the site.

Another site visit took us to the middle of nowhere north of Denver. Construction was still in the very early phases, with grading just getting started. One of the highlights was seeing a massive tree trunk on site that will eventually be carved by an incredibly talented artist, I’m excited to see how that turns out.

It’s also been really nice to be home and save some money on rent, even if my commute ranges anywhere from 40 minutes to over an hour (not ideal). Hopefully, by the time I write my next blog post, I can talk about getting a snow day, although it feels like it doesn’t snow in Colorado anymore… lol.
I enjoyed seeing yall's food pics, so I will continue that.
